I've been a little wishy washy ever since I finished the St. George Marathon last October.
I don't know if I want to attempt another marathon.
I'll decide I never want to do one again and there is no way I want to do another one.
Then I decide I hate that it's beaten me and I'm doing another one.
Back and forth, back and forth. If you've been reading this blog for awhile you've seen a lot of that.
I still don't know what I want to do but it's sure making planning my races for the year difficult.
So tell me, why do you run marathons? Why will you never attempt one?
Help me decide.
Maybe I need to just go watch The Spirit of the Marathon again.

I am a fairly new runner but having lost my first toenail and signed up for my first half this may my feelings on a full marathon is that it's WAY too much to train for. I am enjoying training for halfs and couldn't imagine more hours a week training for a full. Good luck in your planning !!!
ReplyDeleteI love marathons because they're hard. I love them because I'm terrified of them. I love them because not everyone can do a marathon. I love them because when you cross that finish line you know all of your hard work and effort is what got you there.
ReplyDeleteYou can beat the marathon, you just have to be smart. Run smart. And not run a marathon in 85 degree temperatures.
I totally see where you're coming from. I can think of hundreds of reasons NOT to run a marathon.
ReplyDeleteBut...I can think of more reasons why you SHOULD run a marathon. For me it always comes down to that amazing sense of accomplishment after knowing I ran 26.2.
My advice - run a FUN marathon. Do the training and preparation but go into the race without a time goal. Leave the garmin at home and have your goal be to truly have fun for each of the 26.2 miles. Those are seriously my favorite marathons.
I ran the St George in 2008 and was immediately hooked, yet I haven't run another, I said before I had kids that I wanted to do a marathon per child, I have one child, but training takes a lot of time. I'm thinking about it . . . I feel like marathons are 90% mental and an extremely fit 10% physical.
ReplyDeleteDo one more. Just one, and beat it! Don't beat it for time, for pace, just beat it and know that you accomplished it.
ReplyDeleteHaha... You always have the funniest little poster pictures on your blog. Now I just want pie....
ReplyDeleteNo really... I want some pie.
Okay, so I've only done one marathon and I didn't actually do it... if you think it beat you, all I have to say is that at least you finished it. It really beat the snot out of me... and pretty much all my insides decided to show up on my outsides. gross.
I want to do another one, because in my heart I know I can. I don't want that one sorry attempt to be my only one. I want to finish it... and I want to finish it sub 2:45 like I was planning on doing the first time. I don't think I'll be satisfied until I've licked the marathon the same way it did me.
I say go for it! Train hard, love the pain, and eat some pie! (We're gonna need a lot of pie.) Once I'm back on the training path we can sign up for one together and kill it! :)
I think you should try another one.
ReplyDeleteI've done 3 and have thought "this sucks! what were you thinking??" at around mile 23 of each of them. I just love the feeling of being DONE after 26.2 miles. I feel amazing and proud of myself- totally worth it. Usually not until the next day, though ;).
My sister in law did Newport last year and she said it was a good one.
I think you should do another one so I don't have to train by myself:)
ReplyDelete...and that's what matters!
Amy,
ReplyDeleteYou're too right! Loosing toenails is terrifying and exciting. Totally ridiculous to explain to a non-runner!! Good luck with your 2012 schedule - I can't wait to read about it!!!
